The Korea I Dreamed Of
From K-Pop Dreams to Korean Streets: My Life-Changing Journey to South Korea
I’m Nurin Syazwani, and I’ve been a K-pop fan since 2011. What started as a simple admiration for Korean music, dramas, and culture slowly became something much bigger — a dream of visiting South Korea one day.
For years, that dream felt far away. Growing up in a middle-income family, traveling to Korea seemed almost impossible. I would often tell myself, “Maybe one day.” But eventually, that “one day” finally arrived when I turned 23.
Planning My First DIY Trip to Korea
I decided to organise the entire trip on my own. It was a fully DIY Korea trip, planned carefully from start to finish. From budgeting and accommodation to transport and itinerary planning, every detail reflected the experiences I truly wanted:
- Exploring Korean culture and history
- Trying authentic Korean food
- Visiting famous K-pop and entertainment spots
- Discovering local neighbourhoods beyond tourist attractions
Planning the trip independently made the experience even more meaningful because every moment felt personal and intentional.

Arriving in Korea: More Than What We See Online
The moment I arrived in Korea, I realised something important: the country is so much more than what we see online.
Yes, the famous attractions, trendy cafés, and shopping districts are exciting. But what stayed with me the most were the small and unexpected moments that made the journey feel real.

Walking through quiet neighbourhood streets, hearing the Korean language I had spent years learning, and trying local dishes from small restaurants gave me a completely different perspective of Korea.
It wasn’t just about visiting famous places anymore. It was about experiencing daily life, meeting people, and understanding the warmth behind the culture I had admired for so many years.
A Memorable Encounter Between Itaewon and Gangnam
One of the most unforgettable moments of my trip happened during a simple bus ride from Itaewon to Gangnam.
I met a 94-year-old grandfather who started talking to me during the journey. Before we parted ways, he smiled and said:
“건강하게 지내고, 또 한국에 놀러 와요. 한국은 언제든지 환영이에요.”
“Stay healthy, and come visit Korea again. Korea will always welcome you.”
That moment stayed with me long after the trip ended.
It wasn’t part of my itinerary. It wasn’t something I had planned for. Yet somehow, it became one of the most meaningful memories of my entire journey.
Korea Is More Than a Travel Destination
To me, Korea is not just about tourist attractions, K-pop, or entertainment.
It’s about people, connection, and the feeling of being welcomed in a place that once felt impossibly far away.
This journey taught me that sometimes the experiences we dream about for years can become even more beautiful in reality. What once seemed impossible became one of the most life-changing experiences I have ever had.
And if there’s one thing I learned from this trip, it’s this:
Sometimes the best travel memories are the ones you never planned for.
